A field guide to Just For Laughs Northwest!

  • February 22, 2018

Just For Laughs Northwest is around the corner, and we couldn’t be more excited for the funniest time of the year! If you’re visiting from out of town, consider this an introduction to the festival so you can make the most of your time here!

Vancouver has a ton of great venues for comedy. The Comedy Mix is a truly classic comedy club; built in the basement of a hotel, as soon as you descend you’ll see signed memorabilia of famous comedians lining the walls. The Comedy Mix is on Burrard, a short walk from downtown, and you HAVE to see a show for JFL if you’re going to have any kind of cred at all. Check it out on March 7 and 8 to see the Sirius XM
Top Comic showcase to see the finalists of this year’s contest, including Vancouver’s very own Gavin Matts!

Another venue you have to check out is the Rio Theatre. A Vancouver arts mainstay, it’s a short skytrain trip from downtown at Commercial Broadway, famous for its light-up sign and fun events. I’ve got tickets to see Kyle Kinane here on March 3! It’s very cool.

Other major venues include the Vogue Theatre on Granville, and Yuk Yuks on Cambie. Of all the venues, Yuk Yuks is the hardest to get to from downtown – luckily, it’s STILL really easy! Just catch the Canada Line subway from downtown to Broadway/City Hall station, and it’s a five minute walk.

Chances are, it’s the stars like Maria Bamford, Jo Koy, Bill Burr and Cameron Esposito that you’re here to see, but Vancouver has a vibrant stand-up scene with plenty of stars in the making. We recommend you check out the JFL Showcase with two dates: March 6 at the Biltmore Cabaret and March 7 at Yuk Yuks for some of the best local talent! And if you really want to feel “in the know,” check out Foxhole Comedy at the Fox Cabaret on Main street; it takes place every Wednesday, and features only a $5 dollar cover. With all the talent on display at JFL, there’s a good chance headliners will stop by!

If you’re coming for JFL, stay in the heart of the action at the Ramada Vancouver Downtown Hotel. From here you can walk or transit to all the major venues, and we offer incredible comfort for a great price. Book a room here and start planning the comedy trip of a lifetime!
